The video card, or GPU, does the bulk of the work – so the CPU just needs to be fast and not cause a bottleneck. On the other hand, ray-traced rendering programs tend to want either a high-core count CPU or multiple, powerful graphics cards. GPU-based rendering tends to be faster overall, while CPU-based rendering can work on more complex scenes since system RAM can be a lot larger in capacity than VRAM on a video card.
